What is Insomnia?

Insomnia involves both sleep disturbances and daytime symptoms. The effects of insomnia can impact almost on every aspect of your life. Studies shows that insomnia negatively affects work performance, impairs decision-making and can damage relationships. In most cases, people with insomnia report a worse overall quality of life.

The causes, symptoms and severity of insomnia vary from person to person. Insomnia may include:

Chronic insomnia is disrupted sleep that occurs at least three nights per week and lasts at least three months. Chronic insomnia disorders can have many causes. Changes in the environment, unhealthy sleep habits, shift work, other clinical disorders, and certain medications could lead to a long-term pattern of insufficient sleep. People with chronic insomnia may benefit from some form of treatment to help them get back to healthy sleep patterns.

A chronic insomnia lead to Comorbid which is linked to another medical or psychiatric issues, although sometimes it's difficult to understand the realtionship between the cause and effect of insomnia in absence of another underlying condition. These are called primary sleep disorders, in which the sleep disorder is the main cause of insomnia. These conditions generally cause chronic or long-term insomnia.

Treatment:

The main focus of treatment for insomnia should be directed towards finding the root cause. Once the root cause is identified, it is important to control the same, as this alone may eliminate the insomnia all together. Treating the symptoms of insomnia without addressing the main cause is rarely successful. Majority of the cases, chronic insomnia can be cured if its medical or psychiatric causes are evaluated and treated properly.Treatment for insomnia can include behavioral, psychological, medical components or some combination thereof.
